A Neoclassical Home Blending Modern Elegance and Masterful Craftsmanship

General Contractor: Newbury North Associates Inc. | newburynorth.com
Location: Naples, FL
Square Footage: 11,202
Bedrooms: 5
Bathrooms: 9

Creating this neoclassical home with a touch of early modern style was truly a team effort between the architect Bobby McAlpine and the builder Newbury North to achieve the desires of the homeowners’ dreams.

The craftsmanship in every detail was executed with precision, including the slate roof where gutters are hidden behind profiled roof cornices that are shaped inwards. Many linear HVAC supplies and returns are concealed within the monolithic plaster and layered oak ceilings. Interior walls are Venetian plaster with a high gloss finish. The build team chose Italian manufacturer Brombal for all the windows and doors. This manufacturer offers narrow sightlines and thermally broken black stainless-steel windows and doors that are featured throughout the home.

Ceilings within the house incorporate scalloped and cast plaster profiles. This creates a beautiful but subtle detail in the finish between the ceilings and the walls and underside of elements.

Both Susan Ferrier, the interior designer, and Mike Kaiser, the landscape architect, did a masterful job of choosing finishings that complement the symmetrical architecture both inside and outside of this home. Once the discerning homeowners moved in, they were ecstatic with the jewel box that the build and design team had created just for them.

“Working with Newbury North was a pleasure, and they executed the architectural plans perfectly.” – Bobby McAlpine, Architect

Aging is a privilege, and the wisdom gained from life experiences can be applied to enhance our living spaces. Imagine a home that evolves with us through various life stages—whether raising children, enjoying an active lifestyle, or growing older. Designing adaptable homes allows us to adjust our living spaces as our needs change, reducing the emotional and financial stress of starting over. This adaptability extends beyond practical additions like wheelchair ramps or grab bars; it is about creating homes that enable us to age in place and avoid premature moves to senior living communities.

The kitchen requires thoughtful design. It should be both beautiful and functional, reflecting our personalities while also being efficient. As the heart of the home where we prepare meals, host gatherings, and create memories, the kitchen must prioritize functionality over mere aesthetics. Modern kitchens often focus on visual appeal, driven by social media trends, but a kitchen that is not efficient falls short of its primary purpose.

Here are key considerations for planning a kitchen that evolves with you:

  • Ergonomics: Ensure the layout minimizes strain by placing frequently used items within easy reach. Consider features like adjustable countertops, easily replaceable flooring under the kitchen island, and pull-out shelves to accommodate changing needs over time.
  • Lighting: Incorporate ample, adjustable lighting to support changing vision needs, ensuring workspaces are well-lit for both daytime and nighttime use.
  • Storage: Design flexible storage solutions that can be reconfigured as needs evolve, from accommodating small appliances to storing larger items as culinary interests grow.

Bathrooms also require careful consideration for efficiency and personalization. Given the expense of renovations, it’s crucial to plan with long-term use in mind. Your bathroom should be as beautifully crafted as the rest of your home, with features that will serve you well into your later years.

Key considerations for a bathroom design that adapts to changing needs include:

  • Walk-in Showers: Choose barrier-free or low-threshold showers that are easier to access as mobility changes, while adding support behind shower walls for strategically placed grab bars.
  • Non-slip Flooring: Select flooring materials that are both aesthetically pleasing and safe, reducing the risk of slips and falls.
  • Accessible Storage: Install storage solutions that are within easy reach to minimize bending or stretching, and consider future accessibility needs when planning the layout.

By thoughtfully designing kitchens and bathrooms with adaptability in mind, homes can truly evolve with their occupants, allowing for full enjoyment at every stage of life.

Architectural Mastery: A Modern Texas Home by Richard Drummond Davis

Location: Dallas | Fort Worth, TX

Bathrooms: 7 bathrooms, 3 powder rooms
Outdoor Living Space Square Footage: 3,040

Richard Drummond Davis is the architect of our cover house. He has been an architect for over 40 years and believes the painstaking refinement of proportion and detail establishes the character of a truly great building.

This is particularly true of this residence which has four foot deep flat-roofed, cantilevered eaves that give the illusion of a roof that is totally flat making the look more modern. Beyond the flat cantilevered eaves, the roof is gently pitched creating an attic for housing the mechanical equipment, storage, and for a buffered air space to isolate the second floor from the intense Texas sun.

In the great room, there is a floating open walkway forming a bridge that connects both wings of the second floor. This walkway includes LED lights and glass rail with access to the main floor via two different staircases. There are numerous design elements in this residence including a 3D custom made wood panel wall with built-in LED lights in the dining room and a chandelier that features hand-blown glass accents manufactured by Hammerton.

The office features a tailor-made designed desk with marble accents. The desk can be used as either a stand-up desk or as a traditional desk for ease of use for the homeowner. To complete this room, the design team utilized stone from the Stone Collection called Nero Marquina that mirrors the marble on the desk for the accent walls and fireplace.

This residence also includes numerous floor to ceiling windows that capture the natural light but not the heat of the direct sun, thanks to the cantilevered eaves of the roof. In addition, several of the large glass doors in the downstairs living area fold and stack to create large openings out to covered porches and terraces.
